Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is a ten-day festival that worships God Ganesha. It is going to be celebrated on Thursday, 13th September,2018. The festival has great relevance in Maharashtra and it stands out to be one of the most important occasions for the Marathas. It starts on the fourth day of Hindu lunisolar calendar month Bhadrapada, which typically falls in the month of August and September of the Gregorian Calendar.
The festival is approximately for 11 days and the biggest spectacle taking place on the last day after such a long wait called Anant Chaturdashi.
Prominently, In the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Ganesh Chaturthi 2018 date, Ganapati festival is astoundingly celebrated. Mumbai is the best place to lavishly enjoy the festival since it is an enigmatic religious event of the year in the city. People from all over the World, especially foreigners migrate to Mumbai, mostly to take the valuable glimpse of such an auspicious occasion. It is a long wait of 10 days for Marathi people especially, as well as the Hindus from all sects beyond all age groups, are joyful in the swirling mood of the festivities, during this time of the year.
The festival commences with the installation of crafted statues of Ganapati at the houses or podiums, which has been constructed accordingly to suit the purpose and wonderfully decorated. Artisans put efforts of several months to bring perfection to the figure of Ganesha. Legends have it, that moon laughed at Ganesha when he fell from his vehicle, the rat, so it is forbidden to look at the moon during the first night of the festival. On Ananta Chaturdashi (the last day), the statues are paraded through the streets, comprising of enjoyment through singing and dancing, then the sacred statues are immersed in the Ocean as a last part of the ritual.
Once a statue of Lord Ganesh is installed in the homes or temples, a ceremony is carried out to solicit his presence in the diety. This ritual is termed as the Pranapratishhtha Puja. Following this, offerings of sweets, flowers, jaggery, rice, coconut and coins are made to the God.
Every one is a festive mode during these ten days and locals indulge in competitions to put up the prodigious and biggest statue. There is probably crowded hustling streets with devotees seeking to pray their offerings to Lord Ganesha filled with lots of music and cultural programmes.
The festival celebrates Lord Ganesha as the God of New Beginnings and the remover of obstacles as well as the God of wisdom and intelligence. At public avenues and complex societies, group feasting, cultural programmes, martial and art competitions are also held accompanied by hustling crowds of devotees from all over the Country.
Recently, the Government decided to ban the immersion of plastic to curb the impact of plastic pollution in the sea. So, this year Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated without the culmination of any plastic usage which can help people enjoy the festival.
